The whole plant is rich in a milky sap that flows freely from any wounds. This hardens and dries when in contact with the air.
The sap contains “lactucarium”, which is used in medicine for its anodyne,antispasmodic,digestive, diuretic, hypnotic, narcotic and sedative properties.

Lactuca indica extract has the following effects:

1. Lactuca indica extract contains two main compounds—lactucin and lactucopicrin—that act on the central nervous system. Use Lactuca indica extract to relieve painful symptoms.
2. In addition to its sedative and analgesic effects, lactucopicrin is believed to act as an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor; this means that it blocks cholinesterase enzymes responsible for slowing communication between nerve cells. Lactuca indica extract is also said to kill many bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other microorganisms
3. There are few studies on the specific compounds found in Lactuca indica extract .It’s also thought to have antibacterial properties when applied to the skin.
